- CSWE's 2022 EPAS requires a CSWE-accredited degree plus two years' practice.
- Without an eligible MSW, schools assign an off-site instructor plus task supervisor.
- Affiliation agreements can take up to six months, so apply early.
A social work fieldwork supervisor, usually called a field instructor, is the agency-based practitioner who teaches and evaluates BSW or MSW students during required placements, work tied to specific BSW program field placement requirements. MSW students log at least 900 field hours under CSWE standards, so every program depends on these mostly unpaid educators, and many field offices say they struggle to recruit enough.
The core requirements are a CSWE-accredited social work degree, the foundation for becoming a social worker, two years of post-degree practice, agency support, and university approval plus training such as the Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI). State licensure rules and task supervisor arrangements vary.
Start early. Instructor paperwork can clear in weeks, but agency affiliation agreements can sit in legal review for months.
What a Social Work Field Instructor Actually Does Each Week
Supervising a staff member is not the same job as supervising a student. A staff supervisor manages productivity; a field instructor is an agency-based educator whose job is to convert ordinary agency work into structured learning tied to competencies. Students are not extra hands to absorb overflow caseloads. If you take a student expecting free labor, both of you will be miserable by midterm.
The weekly rhythm
- Learning contract: Early in the social work field placement, you co-write the learning plan with the student, translating school competencies into specific agency assignments.
- Assignment selection: You deliberately pick cases, groups, meetings, and projects that stretch the student rather than whatever happens to land on the desk.
- Weekly supervision: Most programs expect a scheduled, uninterrupted msw fieldwork supervision hour each week, separate from hallway check-ins.
- Evaluations: You complete a midterm and final assessment, rating competency performance and documenting evidence behind each rating.
Working the triangle
Social work field education runs on a three-way relationship: student, field instructor, and the school's faculty liaison or field advisor. The liaison is your partner, not an auditor. Call early when performance slips, attendance becomes unreliable, a boundary or ethics concern surfaces, or the placement itself stops offering suitable work. Problems documented in week six are solvable; problems raised in week thirteen rarely are.
Why it pays you back
Teaching forces you to articulate clinical reasoning you had made automatic, which sharpens your own practice. Supervision hours often count toward continuing education, strengthen a promotion case, and give your agency a tested pipeline of future hires.
Field Instructor or Task Supervisor? How the Two Roles Differ
When an agency has no eligible MSW on staff, the placement can still go forward. The school assigns an off-site field instructor who holds primary responsibility for supervision and evaluation, and an agency employee serves as the on-site task supervisor for daily work. If you work in human services without an MSW, or you hold an MSW but have less than two years of post-degree experience, task supervision is a realistic way into field education right now.
| Dimension | Field Instructor | Task Supervisor |
|---|---|---|
| Degree required | Social work degree from a CSWE-accredited program (field manuals require an MSW for MSW students) | Social work degree not required |
| Experience required | At least two years of post-social-work-degree practice experience | Appropriate agency-level experience; an MSW with fewer than two post-MSW years can qualify |
| Who typically fills the role | Agency MSW staff member, or an off-site field instructor assigned by the school | Psychologist, program supervisor, licensed professional counselor, newer MSW, or other human-service professional at the agency |
| Core responsibility | Educational responsibility: reinforces the social work perspective and bridges coursework with field experience | Day-to-day learning activities and agency operations; the student reports directly to this person on site |
| Supervision format | Weekly supervision, typically one hour; reviews process recordings and gives feedback | Ongoing on-site oversight, working under the direction of the field instructor |
| Learning agreement | Coordinates the learning agreement with the task supervisor | Helps shape assignments so they fit the learning agreement |
| Student evaluation | Completes the written competency evaluation and holds primary responsibility for it | Gives evaluative feedback to the field instructor and reports unsatisfactory performance |
| Agency has no eligible MSW | School assigns an off-site instructor (Southern University calls this an Independent Field Instructor) | Agency designates an on-site task supervisor to support daily learning |
Field Instructor Requirements by Student Level
Under the Council on Social Work Education's 2022 EPAS, you need a social work degree from a CSWE-accredited program plus at least two years of post-degree social work practice to supervise students. For MSW students, that means an accredited MSW and two years of post-master's experience. CSWE does not require an LCSW, but individual programs can set stricter rules, so confirm the details with the field office at your target school before you apply.
| Student Level | Minimum Degree | Typical Post-Degree Experience | Licensure Expectation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSW (baccalaureate) students | BSW or MSW from a CSWE-accredited program | At least two years of post-social work degree practice experience | Not addressed by CSWE; licensure is at the program's discretion | If the field instructor lacks an accredited social work degree or the required experience, the program must reinforce a social work perspective and describe how it does so. Buffalo State University and the University of Southern Indiana both apply the two-year experience minimum. |
| Generalist or foundation-year MSW students | MSW from a CSWE-accredited program | At least two years of post-master's social work practice experience | Not addressed by CSWE; licensure is at the program's discretion | CSWE's master's-level standard applies. If no qualified instructor is available on site, the program must assign an alternative field instructor who meets the qualifications. Extra training for an unqualified agency employee does not satisfy the rule. |
| Specialized or advanced-year MSW students | MSW from a CSWE-accredited program | At least two years of post-master's social work practice experience | Not addressed by CSWE; licensure is at the program's discretion | CSWE applies the same master's-level qualifications as the generalist year. Your school may add requirements tied to the student's specialization, so check its field manual. |
| Clinical placements (MSW) | MSW from a CSWE-accredited program | At least two years of post-master's social work practice experience | LCSW not required by CSWE; programs may impose a licensure requirement | Any LCSW requirement for clinical-track students comes from the individual program, not CSWE. If you plan to supervise clinical students, ask the field office directly whether a clinical license is required or preferred. |
Getting Approved: The University Field Office Application Process
At Cleveland State University, field instructor paperwork clears in roughly two to three weeks, but an affiliation agreement that has to go through legal review can take up to six months.1 That gap explains one of the common MSW Field Placement Problems: experienced practitioners who wait until August to volunteer rarely get a student that fall.
Work the Steps in Order
The sequence matters more than the speed of any single piece:
- Accumulate post-degree practice experience. Syracuse, the University of Washington, and Western Kentucky all set the bar at two years of post-degree social work practice.253
- Secure licensure where the jurisdiction requires it. Syracuse expects licensure within scope of practice, and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) specifically when the student is in an advanced clinical placement.2
- Get your social work administrator on board before you apply. Supervision time has to be protected on your calendar, and the agency, not you, becomes the university's counterparty.
- Submit the field instructor application to the school's field office.
- Let the agency and university execute the affiliation agreement.
- Complete orientation, training, or a SIFI course if the school requires it.
What You Will Be Asked to Submit
Expect a short, predictable packet: a current resume or vita, proof of your degree or a diploma copy, license verification, a field instructor application or biographical profile form, and basic agency information. Syracuse collects education, licenses, experience, and disciplinary history on its application, and its Office Coordinator verifies the license directly through the New York State Office of Professions site rather than taking your word for it.2 Western Kentucky asks for diploma and license copies alongside the application and vita.3 Ohio University requires a separate affiliation form for each field instructor, routed through the field liaison to the field education director.4
Who Signs Off
Final eligibility calls sit with the school, typically the director of field education or the field office team, after credentials and the agency site have been reviewed. The University of Washington frames selection as mutual agreement between the school and the agency.5 Note that the affiliation agreement is an institution-to-institution contract signed by the agency and the university, not by you personally, which is exactly why it can sit in legal review for weeks.1
Your Path From Practitioner to Approved Field Instructor
Most universities follow a similar sequence when they approve a new field instructor. Use the steps below as a planning checklist, but confirm the details with each field office, because order and timing vary by school.

Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI): Format, Length, and CEUs
SIFI training is moving away from the campus classroom, with virtual and hybrid delivery now common alongside traditional in-person cohorts. The seminar is a structured course for new MSW field instructors who supervise social work internships, and many schools require it, often during the first year of supervising. It covers learning contracts, social work practice models, and how to evaluate students. Terminology varies, and some schools call it SIPI (Seminar in Practicum Instruction).
Typical Structure
Format requirements vary by school. Examples from current school materials:
- Columbia: 12 one-hour sessions for first-time practicum instructors, plus written assignments. Out-of-state or experienced supervisors new to Columbia may qualify for an abbreviated 3-hour course.1
- Fordham: 12 two-hour sessions (24 hours total)3 held in person at Manhattan, Westchester, and Molloy College locations.2
- York College, CUNY: 14 sessions over 14 weeks, offered in class or online.4
- University at Albany: an 18-hour program.5
Can You Complete SIFI Online?
Often, yes. Springfield College runs its 2025-2026 seminar as eight virtual Zoom meetings of about 1.5 hours, with some asynchronous work.6 York College lists an online option.4 Fordham lists campus locations only, so confirm the format with your school's field office before enrolling.2
Cost and CEUs
Many seminars cost nothing for affiliated supervisors. Fordham, York, Springfield, and Monmouth all describe theirs as free, though Springfield limits enrollment to supervisors in New England and New York, and Monmouth's 2025-2026 seminar is free to its current practicum supervisors. Other schools do not publish a fee, so ask.2467
CEU credit varies too:
- Albany awards 18 free CEUs.5
- Monmouth awards 18 CE hours.7
- Springfield offers up to 20 CEUs, but only if you attend all sessions. A certificate requires attending at least 7 of the 8.6
If you have already completed a comparable seminar elsewhere, some schools accept your certificate in place of repeating the course. Bring proof of completion when you apply.

Time Commitment, Paperwork, and Ethical Duties of Supervising Students
How many hours a week does supervising an MSW student actually take? Plan on at least one hour of scheduled supervision per student, then add time for evaluations, process recording review, and liaison meetings with the school. Western Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Salisbury, Walden, UNLV, Syracuse, and Wilfrid Laurier all set a weekly one-hour minimum.123456 Union University uses one hour every two weeks.7 Laurier allows that cadence for two-day-per-week placements.6 Laurier also caps supervision time at one to two hours per week per student.6
Caseload and Paperwork
These manuals do not name a common maximum number of students per field instructor. East Tennessee State allows group supervision of up to four students, but only within a similar setting and level, and individual sessions are expected for evaluations.2 Ask your field office about its own limit before you accept a second student.
Supervision must be separate from employment supervision. Western Kentucky requires that, and Salisbury has instructors log supervision hours on a timesheet.1 Expect the same discipline for learning agreements and evaluations.
Remote Supervision
Policies differ, and online social work ethics and risk management guidance varies by program. Walden permits electronic supervision but prefers face-to-face, and remote placement hours must be documented in the learning agreement.3 Agency staff must directly supervise a student's first two remote client visits.3 East Tennessee State requires weekly synchronous contact.2 UNLV requires face-to-face supervision, so an all-virtual arrangement would likely not qualify there without an exception.4
Liability and Dual Relationships
Insurance rules mostly target students. Western Kentucky and Walden require students to verify or carry liability insurance for social work students before starting.13 Salisbury and Walden cite limits of $1 million per occurrence and $3 million aggregate.3 East Tennessee State's coverage does not extend between semesters.2 Check with your employer about your own coverage as a supervisor.
Under the NASW Social Work Ethics Code, avoid dual relationships that impair judgment. Do not supervise a friend, family member, or current employee unless the school approves it in writing.
What Experienced Social Workers Earn Nationally
Becoming a field instructor rarely raises your paycheck directly, so plan your career around what you earn in practice.
Social Worker Pay by Metro Area and Career Outlook
These 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage figures for healthcare social workers show what experienced practitioners earn in their primary jobs, not a separate field instructor salary. Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue posts the highest median at $83,550, followed by Los Angeles ($79,830), New York ($78,610), and Boston ($78,410). Demand for future supervisors and the students they train should hold steady: BLS projects social worker employment to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, rising from 816,100 to 866,500 jobs, with about 69,100 openings each year from growth and the need to replace workers who leave or retire.
